The Mash-Tun Is Complete!

February 16, 2010

Well here it is!  The Silver Machine Mash-Tun!

I insulated a 15 litre fermentation bin with two layers of Thermawrap & made the strainer from 22mm braided hose, a drilled out 15 mm tank connector, a gate valve & an elbow fitting to form a rather crude tap.  I found the end of the tap in my garage box of bits ( as my Dad always says: Never throw anything away!)

A quick test for heat retention reveals it loses 2 degrees centigrade over an hour which is fine by me.  I noticed the brass fittings do get rather warm so I may lag them in future.  And once drained 400ml is left in the tun as dead space.  Job’s a good ‘un!

I just have to order some grains & get a day off work so I can brew my first all grain batch now….

Thanks once again to pdtnc who provided inspiration for this design.

Nice mash tun – I used the thermawrap stuff too, pretty expensive but it maintains the ‘shiny’ look ;-). It’s not the best insulator in the world, either – but it does the job.

    • Aye, it certainly makes it look space-age! I can hopefully wrap a sleeping bag around when I actually get to do some mashing. I think it lost around 2 degrees during the test run.
