Rock Hard Water

January 31, 2012

My first all grain in Alsace is coming up so I’m getting all my bits ready.  Given the amount of limescale and clogged up shower heads we have I thought I’d better check on our water hardness.  I used one of these nifty Salifert kits which quickly and easily let you calculate the CaCO3 concentration.

And it turned out to be a whopping 353 mg/L CaCo3 which is indeed rock hard.  I’m planning on doing an English ESB of SRM 17 so I’ll need to reduce that to around 120 mg/L somehow…
